How to read Pokemon card market trends
A single listing is an asking price, not a market. A useful trend comes from repeated sales of the same card under comparable conditions.
Match the exact card first
Cards with the same character can have different sets, languages, artworks, finishes, stamps, and print runs. Trend analysis only makes sense after those details match. Compare collector numbers and set information before comparing prices.
Prefer completed sales
Active listings show what sellers hope to receive. Completed sales show transactions that actually happened, although they can still include outliers, bundles, unclear condition, or unusual shipping terms. Review several recent sales rather than the highest result.
Separate raw and graded markets
A raw card, a lower graded copy, and a top-population high grade serve different buyers. Track them separately. For graded cards, confirm the grading company, grade, label, and certification details.
Watch the context
New set launches, competitive play, reprints, creator attention, grading-population changes, and broader collector sentiment can move demand. Short spikes can reverse quickly, so record the source and date with every snapshot.
