Should you grade your Pokemon card?
Grading can improve buyer confidence, but it also adds fees, shipping, waiting time, and the risk that the grade is lower than expected.
Estimate the likely grade range
Inspect centering, corners, edges, and surface before submitting. Be conservative. A card that looks clean through a sleeve may still have scratches, whitening, or a small dent that materially affects the grade.
Compare the full economics
Compare recent completed sales for the exact card in raw condition and at several realistic grades. Then subtract grading fees, shipping, insurance, marketplace fees, and the value of the time the card is unavailable.
Reasons beyond resale
Collectors also grade cards for authentication, protection, display, or a consistent collection. Those benefits can be worthwhile even when the expected resale increase is small.
Submission checklist
- Confirm the grading company’s current pricing, declared-value rules, and turnaround estimates.
- Photograph the card before shipping and use appropriate protection and tracking.
- Keep purchase, submission, insurance, and return-shipping records.
- Avoid cleaning or altering a card in ways that could damage it or affect authentication.
